Before Sunset

Go on, trudge through the bushes

pick the thorns from your heel

and walk on

wade waist deep in the murky waters

you must go on, my dear

they say,

you do not stop to catch your breath

when your pursuers

do not plan to do so

heave up what little you took along with you

the old leather slipper papa gave to you

if it gets stuck in the mud in the river

tug at it once, twice

and move on

without it

after all,

the greatest things he gave you

you hoist up with your neck

and their fruits sprout from the branches on your hands

travel light

travel fast

you must get there before the sun sets

before your sun sets.
